By answering a need, that is:
When I was in Salem, the city of witches in Massachusetts, I felt hugely inspired and wanted to create an illustration representing that place, known for its wonderfully black houses (which inspired me to create mine), still perfectly intact since the 1600s, and of course for its history. If I had created an illustration with a witch and a house, it would have been a lovely memory for me, but it probably wouldn’t have meant anything to most people. Then “the great simple idea” came to me: adding the words “They can’t burn us all”, and today it’s one of my five best-selling illustrations of all time. I couldn’t say how much money I’ve made with this drawing, but I can say for sure that it’s a lot. Why? Because it touches the heart of all those women who feel different, transgressive, of all feminists, and of everyone who feels like putting on a witch’s hat like me.

2 - When a client asks you for an illustration, you work the other way round: what problem am I solving for my client? Who are they, what do they want? What are they looking for? What event, target audience or field is the drawing for? Here logic reigns supreme and, as you can see, you work the other way round. I study, I analyse the event or topic in question, I study the client: what do they like? What vibe fits them perfectly?
And then begins that dance in which who you are and what others want try to make peace… Because clearly this is the hardest of the three, but also the one that will let you earn the most in the short term. It won’t be easy, but there are some exercises that help unblock creativity, which I’ll tell you about later.

3 - I have to say I’m an expert in this option: my work focuses on events and sales in shops, so what happens? Selling in different contexts means the customers are very varied and the needs to meet are diverse. That said, I’m not able to create anything that isn’t born from a feeling I’ve experienced within myself or through others, and the skill lies in knowing how to filter and “search”, and not create only for myself but also for others.
Is the shop where I sell near the sea? I search my memories for that feeling of salt on my skin and days on a Caribbean beach: what did I feel? What would have made me fall in love at that moment? And it’s as if at that moment I climbed into a drawer and turned everything over until I found the moment, the emotion or the memory I was looking for!

I always think of the birth of an idea as a process of:
absorption
incubation
illumination
problem solving… sometimes the order changes, but the content doesn’t.

It’s important to keep our absorption drawer at a very high level, but never let it overflow — let me explain. Many ideas mature after weeks or years. And the best thing you can do is keep an archive… I have a notebook where I collect ideas and words, and a folder in Procreate where I keep “ugly” or unfinished ideas. And when I find myself having to create a commissioned illustration, I sometimes turn to these archives; or, if it’s a topic I don’t usually work on, after understanding the client I try to make a list of keywords. These automatically turn into images, stories and ideas.

Sometimes I also have a look around Pinterest, I admit it… but you have to be careful: Pinterest is exactly the kind of thing that can make the glass of ideas overflow and turn a thousand ideas into NOTHING. It’s like a Pandora’s box that can cause:

information overload

loss of identity

plummeting self-esteem

wasted time, etc.

And I have to say something… Pinterest partly solves the problem of lack of input for all of us who work from home, just like Instagram. They can be two very useful tools, but when I think of that 18-year-old me I talked about in this month’s letter, I feel nostalgic for the time when I painted surrounded by the books of the artists who shaped me and nothing else. And that me who painted was really me, without random influences. How lovely.

But creativity isn’t just about finding logic in what we create; creativity is also about finding practical and imaginative solutions, and being clever so that the world sees us, understands us and discovers us… and so, once again, we have to add another ingredient to this great soup that is the creative life…

In the next newsletter I’ll teach you how to be resourceful when it comes to selling yourself.

ARTIST OF THE MONTH:

Here again are the illustrations that the artist of the month and I created, inspired by the theme of emotions, because I want beautiful things to stay visible and within reach of anyone who wants to soak up beauty; this way, they’ll always be within everyone’s reach.

This month’s artist is Irina Selaru, a Romanian freelance illustrator and artist based in London.
